Fingerprint: With a choice of optical, capacitance, and resistance fingerprint readers, fingerprint technology is very affordable and mature but quality and usability varies greatly across the reader range. Vein: Vein patents from Fujitsu (palm vein) and Hitachi (finger vein) are providing a higher quality alternative to fingerprints but with the same ease of usability. Increasingly solutions are supporting both vein and fingerprint authentication, such as Softex OmniPass Enterprise SSO and M2SYS Hybrid SDK. Also available as OEM units.
Iris: Iris is a good quality biometric characteristic for authentication. Generally reserved for specialist applications due to the cost of the hardware and usability factors. Vein authentication is providing strong competition to iris-based solutions.
Smartcards: A cheap and convenient method to providing additional authentication, but lacks the accountability to the user as it can be easily shared, lost or stolen.
